As some might recall, I started my first training a short while ago (see Ten Tired Turtles on a Tuttle Tuttle Tree). I hired a trainer because (1) I was becoming a sloth (2) I hate gyms and (3) the sessions were prepaid so I felt compelled to show up.
I've gotten sessions twice a week for about six weeks. So how is it going?
- I'm stronger. I'm able to life much heavier weights than when I started, and am able to keep the level and difficulty of excercise much higher than in the first two weeks.
- I need to eat more and better now to keep a reasonable weight on, and to make it through these sessions. It's a good motivation to pay better attention to the food I choose and reversed a trend that clothes were getting tighter.
- I'm having a lot of fun! I can't wait to go to the next session. The trainer mixes routines up so it's always interesting. And we're doing a lot of kickboxing; a sport I think I just might have fallen in love with.... It's rising up as a possible next sport to tackle.
On the balance, training can begin to be costly, but it's an amazing investment for the body, and much more focused in its results than sports alone (my previous method of fitness). I also supplement training with 1-2 sessions of tennis per week for more aerobic benefits.
A shout out to Daniel at the JCC in San Francisco for making training so much fun!
