Wadi Rum, Jordan
While I recently noted the wonderful silence that can be found in the desert of Wadi Rum, I'd like to note one special exception. Following a night in the desert and a near-silent sunrise at 5am, dogs started barking at a distant Bedouin encampment right around 6am. They were answered in turn by dogs at even more distant camps, their barks echoing off the steep cliffs around them.
Did all this barking serve as an alarm clock for the local Bedouin people? Following a few minutes of barking, the dogs all fell silent, then resumed barking at 6:15, then fell silent, and then resumed barking again at 6:30am.
Is it possible these wonderfully useful dogs also have the advanced feature of a snooze setting?
