Hi Heida,

Do the people there seem happy on average? One of the things I notice when traveling in Indonesia is that the general population seems very happy even though their living conditions are poor by US standards.

Hi Graham -

I've gotten the same impression in many of the countries I've visited.

However, it seems different in the case. Conditions are quite unhealthy and people are trying to get basic needs met under what is a corrupt and (still) oppressive government. Many also struggle with a sadness for all the family members lost to the former Khmer Rouge regime.

They won't complain, but they continue to face many, many challenges.

Best,

Heida
